Is now the time to upgrade from QlikView to Qlik Sense?

Qlik | september 6, 2019 |

Here are some of the reasons why it might be.

It is safe to say there has never been a better time than right now to upgrade from QlikView to its leading-edge sibling, Qlik Sense. We are frequently asked from about when and why to move to Qlik Sense, so in this piece we highlight some of the key considerations and benefits to moving up.

It is free

A surprisingly large amount of QlikView customers are still not aware of this, but despite being the clearly more advanced product, moving to Qlik Sense is free if you have QlikView. If you are a QlikView customer today, you can exchange your licenses to the equivalent Qlik Sense licenses at no cost.

This is obviously an amazing deal and shows Qlik’s commitment to their customer base. The offer is what Qlik refer to as your Remix Rights, and the newest thing is that everybody qualifies. There are even capacity-based options if you have Session CAL or Usage CAL. The only catch is that this great offer is only available if you are moving all your licenses to Qlik Sense.

But what if you have complicated QlikView sheets that you love and want to keep? Qlik also gives you the option to switch to Dual Use, giving your users access to both QlikView and Qlik Sense in exchange for an increase in your yearly maintenance. Many customers use this offer to make all the new development in Qlik Sense, while still having the old QlikView applications. An in-expensive and convenient way to make the transition as seamless as possible.

Self-service

While QlikView is classified as a guided analytics platform, Qlik Sense is a true self-service platform. Qlik Sense’s user interface makes it easy for even business users to create amazing looking dashboards and share their findings with co-workers. Qlik Sense uses a lot of drag-and-drop functionality, minimizing the requirements for coding to solve simple tasks. Qlik Sense also has a Master Library where you can store reusable items like approved calculations, measures, dimensions, and charts. This makes it easy way for IT to let self-service users lose in a governed environment, making sure this is always one version of the truth. Finally, Qlik Sense have recently been added with a lot of augmented intelligence features to help users all the way through building data models and dashboards to finding hidden insights.

Create and explore on any device

Qlik is all about clicking around to find new insights, making the touchscreen a great interface. While mobile is also available for QlikView, Qlik Sense was clearly made with mobile in mind.

With native apps for android and IOS you can easily take your analytics on the road. Qlik Sense always scales to the size of your screen, so all your dashboards are instantly available for mobile users in a mobile-friendly style. This means mobile does not become an extra hurdle, but just another interface that users can switch to whenever and wherever.

Embedded Analytics

Embedded analytics is becoming increasingly more popular and luckily Qlik Sense is made for it. Easily embed single objects or whole sheets into basically anything: Your intranet, extranet, web applications, CRM, or whatever you like. There are several ways of doing this from iFrames to div integrations, and we really love how it brings analytics much closer to the where the users are. Analytics should not be isolated and by embedding it into other operational systems, it becomes a much closer part of the daily decision-making processes.

Access to all the new exiting features and products

The final reason to go for Qlik Sense is that clearly all the new exiting features are being made for Qlik Sense. A great example of this was the recent release of Qlik Insight Bot, an exciting new conversational analytics feature, which is only available with Qlik Sense. Another example is the cognitive engine, now a standard part of Qlik Sense. The cognitive engine enables exiting new features like accelerated self-service and the new Insight Advisor for both visual insight suggestions and associative insights. Qlik Sense is constantly getting amazing new functionalities to keep it at the cutting-edge of business intelligence platforms, meaning it is where you need to be to make sure you have access to all the new benefits.

It has never been easier to upgrade

As mentioned in the beginning, it has never been easier to switch to Qlik Sense from QlikView. Free is a pretty good price for a leading BI-tool with many more functionalities. Qlik Sense and QlikView uses the same engine, which is why converting from one to the other is usually not that complicated. With Qlik Sense, you also get free access to a conversion tool for converting your QlikView applications to Qlik Sense applications. The QlikView governance dashboard has been added with a new feature for estimating how straightforwardly your QlikView applications can be transferred to Qlik Sense. Meaning, even before you start the process, you can get an idea of how difficult the transition will be.

All in all, moving from QlikView to Qlik Sense carries no license cost and has never been easier. What you get in return is a leading, futureproof BI-platform that can do all the things you do today and so much more.
